For me, summer is a time of exploration and discovery. It's a time for finding new music, reading books I wouldn't have picked up or didn't have time to pick up during the school year, watching movies I've been wanting to watch for months, catching an episode or two of a TV show on reruns. It's a time to find out about myself, because my friends aren't around all the time, and I don't have as many obligations (read: school). This summer of course will be different from last year, because I'm working full time at the Butchart Gardens. That's a significant responsibility, and I will be surrounded by my fellow employees as well as visitors at all times. But it's a very different atmosphere from the ones I'm used to at home and at school/with my friends. The people are different, and of course we're expected to earn our keep! But I expect I will still have time for myself as well.
I have high hopes for this summer. I've never looked forward to the end of the school year so much. I just haven't gotten along with one of my teachers in particular, and didn't have courses that interested me, particularly in the second semester. I was a bit of a mess this year, I'll be the first to admit it, but the mess was not all my fault, and I don't think it's fair to say it was. Maybe I could have been more caring and compassionate. Maybe I could learn to be more polite towards people I don't like or respect. And I could probably learn a few things about time management. I *can* manage my time; I just choose not to. How precocious does that sound? Isn't it the whole point of time management that you manage your time well? If you don't manage your time well then you don't have good time management! Next year is looking up though. No more math, no more social studies or history courses, I'm done with chemistry, IS (whatever that is) is long gone... All I have to do is cross my fingers that Mme Young comes back to teach Civilisations Comparatives 12. She looked so happy at Grilligans when Julia, Robyn, and I visited her... but if she doesn't teach it, who will? I pray it will not be Mme Tomasino. She is the sweetest woman in the world, but she cannot teach! What a pity! but I'm not God and nobody is perfect, so we must live with her imperfections.
I have a pile of new CDs from the library next to me, and more on the way. I have money in the bank (...though not for long). I have a great job that's not going anywhere soon. I need one course to graduate from high school, and one more to get my Double Dogwood; the rest are electives. I'm president of ESCAPE next year. I'm finally starting to see what my path is in life: nowhere in math or science, I can say that for certain now!
Summer vacation is a chance for discovery, a chance for me to look into myself and find out something new. It's a chance for me to do the things I really love, all the things I've been delaying and wishing I could do since last September! And though I'm extremely lucky to go to Esquimalt High School and have such fabulous teachers (mostly) and friends, sometimes I need that time to be myself, really myself. And I love that time so much. It is absolutely enlightening. I find places in myself that I never knew existed, and it is for those moments that I live (as well as others... let's not get too introverted now ahaha).
I suppose I shall go study now... still two provincials to do, then... truth, beauty, freedom, love!
